From the task of managing my books, MCs, CDs, floppies, etc. my database, originally in dBase, then MS Access, then PostgreSQL, grew and grew and grew both in size and functionality, included documents (the "soft" part of books), physical objects (the "hard" part), persons (authors), and so on, and entity-relationship DB.
